Instagrammable spots for tea & food in Marrakech
Riad Yasmine is 100% the most instagrammable riad in Marrakesh. If you can’t get availability to stay then just pop over for a mint tea (use the same travel agent line if you need). Make sure to head up to the roof top for breathtaking views of the city and a cool birds eye view of the pool – also the first floor landing gives good angles for photos of the pool.
The Henna Café is a ten min walk from Le Riad Yasmine – rather than get henna in Jemaa el-Fna save it for here. They have a modest rooftop café where you can buy drinks and food whilst waiting for your henna to dry, and all proceeds go back to the local schools. If you’re really organised, they also runs classes like yoga etc. The henna costs between 100-400 DHS depending on your design and the amount of body parts you want involved.
Koutoubia Mosque was probably the highlight of our trip – get there about 40 mins before the sun goes down to get the beautiful colours in the sky behind the mosque. The square is packed at this time so keep your friends close and your possessions closer.
Cafe Kif Kif is a fairly new restaurant with incredible views of Koutoubia Mosque – it’s just over the road. Try and get there soon after sunset as there are only a handful of tables on the rooftop. Yummy tagine and the best vegetarian pastilla.

Insider tips
-
Understand the city:
To explore the city properly you need to understand it. ‘Old Marrakech’ is the medina, the fortified old city that was built centuries ago. Some families still live in the medina and this is where you will find the riads and souks. ‘New Marrakech’ is the new part of the city that lies outside the ancient city walls of the medina – this is where you’ll find the modern hotels etc and Jardin Majorelle.
-
Stay in a riad
-
To stay on the safe side, drink bottled water and even use it to brush your teeth.
-
Accept the hassling- it will happen, be firm, say, ‘No thank you.’ Move on.
-
Wear appropriate clothing- no super short shorts, tight or skimpy clothes, men don’t reveal bare chest. You’ll draw unwanted attention.
-
Agree your taxi fare first
You will be seen as a walking credit card by many locals, and taxi drivers will try scam you into paying a higher fare. Agree your fare with the driver before you travel (use your haggling skills here)…if you’re not sure what you should be paying check with your riad / hotel as they will be able to give you an estimate.
-
Get places early
-
Don’t fall for any tricks by local 'free' guides.
You’ll probably hear ‘that ways closed,’ or ‘the festival of colour is this way.’ These one liners are designed to get you over to their stall / their brothers stall / their uncles stall, or to their tannery. Just smile and walk on by…
-
Don’t fall for the tannery scam
If you want to see the tanneries, again, speak to your riad / hotel. They will have the best information on how to visit them without being ripped off.
-
Download ‘Maps Me’ from the App store-If you don’t have data to use abroad, then this is a life saver for any country (especially in the medina in Marrakech). The app allows you to see your location, drop pins and follow point to point routes on the map. God send!
